Alfred Vestring

Alfred Vestring (born January 2, 1930 in Castrop-Rauxel ) is a former German diplomat who was ambassador to the Yemeni Arab Republic between 1969 and 1971 , ambassador to Madagascar from 1971 to 1975 , and ambassador to Saudi Arabia between 1979 and 1981 , 1981 Permanent representative to UNESCO until 1985 and most recently Ambassador to Pakistan from 1989 to 1995 .

Life

After graduating from high school, Vestring began studying law and economics at the University of Paris , the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität and the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn , which he completed in 1957 with the first state examination in law.

In 1957 Vestring began the preparatory service for the higher foreign service and after its completion was initially a member of the political department at the headquarters of the Foreign Office in Bonn between 1959 and 1961 . In 1961 he was promoted to Legation Councilor and then worked at the Embassy in Lebanon before he was employed as First Class Councilor at the Embassy in Morocco between August 31, 1966 and 1967 . After his return to Germany, he was first class Legation Councilor and advisor in the Middle East and North Africa Department of the Foreign Office's Political Department from 1967 to 1968 and then between July 1, 1968 and July 1969 as First Class Legation Advisor, Personal Advisor to the Parliamentary State Secretary Foreign Office , Gerhard Jahn .

After the Federal Republic of Germany had established diplomatic relations with the Yemeni Arab Republic on July 15, 1969 , Vestring became the first ambassador there. On September 16, 1969, he presented his credentials to the President of the Yemen Arab Republic , Abdul Rahman al-Iriani . He then became ambassador to Madagascar in the summer of 1971 and remained in this post until the summer of 1975.

After his return at the end of 1975 he was first head of a department in the Foreign Cultural Policy Department and then, as a lecturer in the first class, until the end of November 1979, he was head of the West and Central Africa department of the Political Department of the Foreign Office. At the end of 1979, Vestring succeeded Reinhard Schlagintweit as ambassador to Saudi Arabia , based in Jeddah . He then became permanent representative of the Federal Republic of Germany to UNESCO in Paris in the rank of ambassador and held this function until 1985.

Most recently Vestring was appointed Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Pakistan in 1989 after a renewed use in the Foreign Office as the successor to the retired Gerd Berendonck . He remained in this ambassadorial post until his own retirement in 1995. His successor was then the previous ambassador to Nigeria , Jürgen Kleiner .

Vestring, who now lives in Bonn , campaigned for a peaceful end to the embargo in the Iraq war and the civil war in Syria .
