Reinhard Schlagintweit

Reinhard Christian Schlagintweit (born March 12, 1928 in Munich ; † October 13, 2018 ) was a German diplomat .

Life

Reinhard Schlagintweit was born as the son of a doctor on March 12, 1928 in Munich and went to school there. In 1943 he was drafted as a flak helper; a few months before May 8, 1945, he and his classmates were released. From 1945 to 1948 he studied law in Munich. After the first state examination, he worked as a family friend for eight months on a farm in the south of England. He then worked for a Munich bank.

In August 1952 he joined the Foreign Service. In January 1955 he was transferred to the embassy in Ankara . From 1958 to 1961 he was Legation Counselor at the German Embassy in Kabul ; Deputy Ambassador in Bangkok from 1963 to 1967 . From 1970 to 1971 he headed the German information office in New York City . Then he took on lectures in the cultural department of the Foreign Office in Bonn . From 1976 to 1979 he represented the Federal Republic as ambassador to Saudi Arabia. From 1987 to 1993 he headed the Political Department for Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East at the headquarters of the Federal Foreign Office. After his retirement, he headed the business of the German Society for Foreign Policy as Executive Vice President . Between 1992 and 2005 he was chairman of the German Committee for UNICEF .
