Norbert Montfort

Norbert Montfort (born May 6, 1925 in Cologne ; † August 4, 2016 ) was a German diplomat who was ambassador to Mauritania , Saudi Arabia and Morocco , among others .

Life

After graduating from high school, Montfort, the son of a businessman , studied law at the University of Cologne and graduated with the first and second state exams.

In 1955 he joined the Foreign Service and was an attaché at the embassy in Egypt during his training in 1956 . After completing the career test for the higher service, he was initially employed at the Foreign Office in Bonn between 1958 and 1959 . After a subsequent employment at the embassy in Lebanon , he was employed at the embassy in Iraq in 1961 , before he was employed at the embassy in Taizz from 1963 to 1964 . After his return to Germany, he was a consultant in the Foreign Office from 1964 to 1966 and then consul in Kuwait .

After Montfort was ambassador to Mauritania between 1971 and 1974 , he received his accreditation as ambassador to Saudi Arabia in 1974 , where he worked until 1976.

In 1976 he returned to Germany and became head of the department for the Middle East and the Maghreb , before he was promoted to ministerial director in 1979 and, as the successor to Hans-Joachim Hille , who in turn became ambassador to Egypt , the Federal Foreign Office's commissioner for Middle East policy was appointed. In this function, together with the ambassador to Iran Gerhard Ritzel, he also took on mediation tasks during Operation Eagle Claw in the course of the hostage-taking of Tehran between November 1979 and January 1981.

Montfort was most recently accredited as ambassador to Morocco in 1984 and retained this position until he was retired in 1990. He was then followed by Murad Wilfried Hofmann .
