Hans-Joachim Hille (born April 23, 1921 in Zittau ) is a former German diplomat who was, among other things, the spokesman for the Foreign Office and ambassador to Jordan , Ecuador , Egypt and Peru .

Life

Studies and spokesman for the Foreign Office

After graduating from high school in Dresden , Hille was called up for military service at the beginning of the Second World War in 1939 and was taken prisoner by the US during the war . During his imprisonment he studied English , history and literature at the "camp university" .

After his release from captivity in 1946, he began a study of the subject Modern History , International Law , English Studies and German Studies at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main and graduated in 1950 with the promotion of Dr. phil. with a dissertation on reason and history with Woodrow Wilson . He then worked as a research assistant at the Philosophical Faculty there.

In 1952 Hille joined the newly founded Foreign Service of the Federal Republic of Germany and completed his training in the higher service in 1954 with the career test. He then worked as legation secretary in the office of Walter Hallstein , the state secretary in the Foreign Office , before he worked as a legation councilor at the embassy in France in 1955 .

In December 1958 he returned to Germany and worked in the press department of the Foreign Office in Bonn . After his promotion to Legation Council First Class, Hille became head of the press department in 1961 and thus spokesman for the Foreign Office. In this capacity he was promoted to Lecturer First Class Councilor in 1962. In 1964 he moved to the embassy in Turkey as first class counselor , where he was permanent representative of the ambassador.

Ambassador to Jordan, Ecuador, Egypt and Peru

After the resumption of diplomatic relations between Germany and Jordan in February 1967, he became ambassador to Jordan on June 28, 1967 and held this office until the beginning of Black September 1970 , the bitter civil war in Jordan.

After that, in November 1970 he worked in the Political Department of the Foreign Office. After further assignments abroad, including from April 1971 to February 1974 as ambassador to Ecuador and, most recently, at the headquarters of the Foreign Office in Bonn as ministerial director and representative for Near and Middle Eastern policy, Hille succeeded Wolfgang Behrend's ambassador in Egypt in December 1979 , while Norbert Montfort , the previous head of the Middle East and Maghreb Department, became the Federal Foreign Office's new representative for Middle East policy. In this capacity he took part in the celebrations for the occupation of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi in Cairo in 1980.

Subsequently, in January 1982 he succeeded Hans Werner Loeck as ambassador to Peru , while Kurt Müller succeeded him as ambassador to Egypt.

The Office of the Ambassador in Peru had Hille until his age-related dislocation in the retirement in 1986 held. Shortly before it was passed, there was a dispute with Hubert Kleinert , a member of the Bundestag for the Greens , during a visit by members of the German Bundestag . Before a Bundestag delegation spoke to Interior Minister Abel Salinas, he harshly urged the Green MP Hubert Kleinert to put on a tie immediately. The ambassador complained that his elevator was “an insult to the hosts”. Kleinert, at least with a black jacket and white shirt, made it clear that his clothing was “none of your business”. Hilles etiquette rules even went too far for the head of the delegation Erich Riedl , CSU . In his dinner speech, he ironically praised the high improvisation skills of the Peruvians, who “were able to present so many hosts without ties to the German guests”.

After his retirement , the ambassadorial office was taken over by Johannes von Vacano , who was previously accredited as ambassador to Kenya and the Seychelles .
