Wolfgang Behrends

Wolfgang Behrends (born January 12, 1926 in Oberhausen ; † July 7, 2009 ) was a German diplomat who was ambassador to Egypt and Canada , among other things .

Life

After graduating from high school , Behrends completed a degree and joined the Foreign Service after completing his studies . After completing the career test for the higher service, he was employed at various missions abroad and at the headquarters of the Foreign Office in Bonn .

At the end of the 1960s, as a lecturer in the Legation Council, he was deputy head of division for NATO , military affairs of the WEU and defense in the Foreign Office. In this capacity he was promoted to Lecturer First Class Councilor and Head of this Department on July 14, 1967 .

Based on this experience, on October 30, 1973, Behrends became ambassador head of the German delegation to the Mutual and Balanced Force Reductions (MBFR), the "Negotiations on the mutual reduction of armed forces and armaments and related measures in Europe" that began in Vienna . .

In February 1977, suspected that Behrends, a member of the SPD , due to its acquired at the MBFR negotiation skills as a successor of the retirement came Hellmuth Roth would new Representative for Disarmament Affairs of the Foreign Ministry. In this function, however , Friedrich Ruth, who is close to the CDU , was appointed by Federal Foreign Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher .

As the successor to Erich Strätling , who has been retired, he received his accreditation as ambassador to Canada in 1983 . He worked there until his own retirement in December 1990, before being followed in early 1991 by Richard Ellerkmann , who was previously Ambassador to Iraq .
