Friedrich Ruth

Friedrich Ruth (born February 10, 1927 in Michelfeld ; † September 1, 2016 in Bonn ) was a German diplomat . He was ambassador to Italy from 1986 to 1992 .

Life

Friedrich Ruth, son of a businessman, was still engaged as a soldier in 1944/45. From 1948 to 1955 he studied teaching at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg (1948–1949) and philology (1950–1955). In 1955 he was charged with a thesis on the belief Tobias Smollett to Dr. phil. PhD .

In 1956 he joined the Foreign Office in Bonn . After his preparatory service for the higher foreign service, he worked at the Consulate General Chicago (1959–1962) and at the embassy in Washington (1962–1966). From 1966 to 1967 Ruth was Head of Section II B 2 (European Security and Other Regional Security Measures) in Department II (Political Department) at Bonn headquarters.

In 1967 he moved to the Federal Chancellery , where he worked in Department Z (1967-1970) and Department I (1968). From 1968 to 1969 he was in charge of Section I / 4 (Chancellor's office; personal mail and trips by the Chancellor, protocol matters).

In 1970 he again moved to the Foreign Office and was initially at the NATO Defense College in Rome. He then took over the management of Section II B 2 (European security, other questions of regional disarmament and arms control) in Department II (Political Department) (1970–1972), Head of Section II B 2 in Department 2 (Political Department) (1970–1972) and head of Unit 221 (European Security; Regional Disarmament, Arms Limitation and Arms Control) (1976–1977).

In 1973 he became envoy head of the German delegation at the MBFR preliminary negotiations in Vienna. From 1977 to 1986 he was Ambassador Head of Subdivision 2A (Federal Government Commissioner for Disarmament and Arms Control).

From December 1986 to February 1992 Ambassador to Rome and San Marino , then permanent representative of the Federal Republic of Germany to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Rome.

As the personal representative of Foreign Minister Klaus Kinkel , he was involved in the 1997 to 1998 convention on the prohibition of the use, storage, manufacture and distribution of anti-personnel mines and their destruction in 1997, the so-called Oslo Mines Conference.

Ruth was involved in the Federal Chancellor Adenauer House Foundation . He was President and Honorary President of the VDIG - Association of German-Italian Cultural Societies (federazione delle associazioni italo-tedesche). Also honorary chairman of the Istituto di Cultura Germanica - ACIT. For many years he was head of the coordination office for the German-Italian youth exchange.

Friedrich Ruth died in Bonn at the age of 89.
