Erich Strätling

Erich Strätling (born October 23, 1918 in Essen , † September 16, 2003 in Bonn ) was a German diplomat .

Life

Strätling studied law at the University of Bonn and was a soldier in World War II . After his release from Soviet captivity , he worked in the Parliamentary Council and later in the Legal Committee of the German Bundestag .

He was the German ambassador

During his tenure as Ambassador to Romania in 1967 diplomatic relations between the Federal Republic of Germany and the People's Republic of Romania were established.

In 1977, when Colonia Dignidad came under surveillance by the UN and Amnesty International and serious human rights violations were denounced, Strätling was commissioned by the Foreign Office to investigate the allegations and to get an idea of ​​the situation. After a several-day visit to the Colonia in their leader Paul Schaefer reported Strätling, he may give his word of honor that the allegations (including torture and child abuse ) are totally unfounded. He had been in close friendly contact with Schäfer before. After his retirement, Strätling was Vice President of the Research Institute of the German Society for Foreign Policy (DGAP) in Bonn in the 1980s .

Federal President Walter Scheel honored him in 1979 with the Great Cross of Merit of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany .
