Farßmann or On Foot in the Dead End is a DEFA feature film by Roland Oehme from 1991 based on several stories by Hermann Kant .
action
Farßmann, he has no first name in this film, is a divorced man who got an apartment in Berlin's Stargarder Strasse and wants to furnish himself. In the house opposite there is a bakery who offers fresh rolls every day . That's why there is always a line in front of his shop. Farßmann also wants to buy his rolls there and is also eaten up by Frau Lörke, a resident of the house. When asked what he is doing for a living, he answers an accountant. But the older lady understands booksellers and tells everyone this too. The master baker Schwint, who jealously pays attention to his wife in the shop, also immediately addresses the supposed bookseller. If he could get him the Chinese erotic book Tsching Pin Mek, he wouldn't have to queue anymore, and his bag with the fresh rolls would hang on the third hook in the yard every morning. His young colleague has borrowed the book, but at the moment. When she gets it back, Farßmann realizes that it is written in Chinese and does not want it. Which in turn amazes his colleague, because actually it only depends on the pictures. As the master baker becomes restless, Farßmann has to step up his activities. His cousin can get him the book, but wants two tickets for the zoo ball in return. The authorized representative for the ball tickets is only ready to hand them in if he gets a quick appointment for his son at the registry office. The registrar he meets only wants to surrender it against the installation of a telephone. When Farßmann arrives at the person responsible for approving the phone with his roll bag, and he smells the fresh baked goods and bites into them, he gets the confirmation for the phone, but only for the handing over of the third hook to master baker Schwint. Farßmann now stands in line in front of the store every morning to get his rolls.
More have been added around this story. Farßmann met the pharmacist Lena Simoneit, who wanted to sell him household insurance for his apartment as a part-time insurance agent. A relationship seems to be developing between the two. Lena inherited a large iguana from her divorced husband. Farßmann cannot cope with that at all. Only when the lizard dies and is cremated in the pharmacy's oil heater does the problem seem to be cleared up.
He also gets involved in a secret matter. An American billionaire from the state of Utah wants to hand over a million donation to the GDR. Therefore Farßmann should travel to the USA and make the appropriate arrangements. For this he is supported by the lawyer Dr. Falke and his colleague Doreen Wegmann, who prepare everything for him. All he has to do is pick up his passport himself from the police. Although this is an official mandate of the state, there are two state security employees who do not know this and are constantly watching him because everything seems suspicious to them.
As the newly appointed chief accountant of the VEB Ordunetz, which is the abbreviation for medals and decorations, Farßmann is given the task of dealing with the past of the company. He found out that many years ago a bronze equestrian monument disappeared from the company premises. A former executive did not have the bronze reworked into decorations in the hope that it would be put up again. Farßmann found the memorial as part of a pond in the depot. He, who never wanted to be anything special, preferably not even the chief accountant, was now allowed to stand among the “highest representatives of the highest realm” at the re-inauguration.
production
The stories The Third Nail , Bronze Age , The Osbar Case , The Essence of L. and Plexa by Hermann Kant were the basis for Rudi Strahl's scenario .
The film had the working title Vor-Zeiten and was shot from August 29 to November 2, 1990. Some of the outdoor shots took place in Stargarder Strasse ( Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg ) and in the old Potsdam gasworks .
Farßmann or On Foot in the Dead End was filmed in color by the DEFA Studio for Feature Films (Artistic Working Group “Babelsberg”) and had its premiere on September 5, 1991 in the Berlin house on Köllnischen Park .
criticism
Günter Sobe said in the Berliner Zeitung that DEFA itself has hit a dead end with such wannabe amusements. As far as the dramaturgy is concerned, the jokes and stories have not been brought into line a little or under one roof.
The lexicon of international films wrote that this was a cramped attempt at comedy that emerged during the upheaval in the GDR, which gives the impression that the song of praise of foul conformism should be sung.
