Ulrike Knotz

Ulrike Maria Knotz (born July 27, 1954 in Augsburg ) is a German diplomat . She has been ambassador to Algeria since 2018 . Before that, she was Ambassador to North Macedonia from 2008 to 2011 , Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina from 2011 to 2014 and Ambassador to Moldova from 2014 to 2017 .

Life

After graduating from high school , Ulrike Maria Knotz studied German , history , political science and Arabic language at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich between 1973 and 1979 and graduated in 1979 with the first state examination for teaching at grammar schools . After a subsequent stay abroad in Cairo as a translator for the Arabic language at the Federal Office for Foreign Trade Information , she completed her traineeship at grammar schools in Erlangen and grammar school Gars in Gars am Inn between 1981 and 1983 and then passed the second state examination for teaching at grammar schools in 1983 .

career

In 1983 she joined the Foreign Service and, after completing her preparatory service, worked in the cultural department of the Foreign Office from 1985 to 1988 . After working as a cultural advisor at the embassy in Spain , she worked in the economic department of the Foreign Office from 1991 to 1993, before becoming the ambassador's permanent representative in Slovakia until 1997 . After a subsequent assignment in the European department and again in the cultural department of the Foreign Office, she was press officer at the embassy in the Netherlands between 2000 and 2003 and at times also an exchange officer in the Dutch foreign ministry . Afterwards she was first permanent representative of the ambassador in Algeria until 2005 and then until 2008 head of department for the dialogue with the Islamic world in the Federal Foreign Office.

From September 2008 to July 2011 Ulrike Maria Knotz was ambassador to North Macedonia and thus the successor to Ralf Andreas Breth . In July 2011 she succeeded Joachim Schmidt as ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina , while the previous consul general in Novosibirsk , Gudrun Steinacker , became the new ambassador to North Macedonia. In 2014, she was replaced as ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina by Christian Hellbach , who was previously head of division in the Federal Foreign Office. From August 20, 2014 to August 2017, she was the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to the Republic of Moldova and from 2017 to 2018 she was Head of the Consulate General in Wroclaw . Since 2018 Knotz has been the head of the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Algeria .
