description

Carpinus henryana is a tree up to 18 meters high with gray, torn bark . The twigs are reddish-brown, initially hairy and shaggy and later balding. The leaves have a 1 to 1.7 centimeter long, glabrous or sparsely hairy, silky-shaggy stem. The almost leathery leaf blade is 5 to 8 centimeters long and 2 to 3 centimeters wide, narrow-lanceolate, elliptic-lanceolate or oblong-lanceolate, pointed or tail-pointed, with a rounded or more or less heart-shaped, sometimes oblique base and a single toothed one Leaf margin. 14 to 16 pairs of nerves are formed. The upper side of the leaf is sparsely hairy, silky-shaggy, the underside is provided with point-shaped glands and hairy silky-shaggy along the veins and has axillary whiskers on the lateral veins.

The female inflorescences are 6 to 7 inches long with a diameter of 2 to 2.5 inches. The inflorescence axis is about 2 inches long and hairy downy. The bracts are half-egg-shaped, pointed or pointed. The leaves have four or five veins of the first order. The outer leaf margin is irregular and closely serrated, the inner part is entire with a rolled up ear and without a lobe at the leaf base. The fruits are about 4 millimeters long and 3 millimeters wide, ribbed and, except for the sparsely shaggy hairy tip, bare nuts . Carpinus henryana flowers from May to June, the fruits ripen from July to August.

The natural range is in China in the east of Gansu , in the west of Guizhou , in Henan , in the west of Hubei , in the south of Shaanxi , in the east of Sichuan and in Yunnan. There the species grows in temperate forests at an altitude of 1600 to 2900 meters.

Systematics

Carpinus henryana is a species of the hornbeam genus ( Carpinus ). This is in the family of birch plants of the subfamily (Betulaceae) coryloideae assigned (Coryloideae). The species was first scientifically described in 1904 by Hubert Winkler as Carpinus tschonoskii var. Henryana as a variety of Carpinus tschonoskii . In 1914 he changed the status of the taxon and described it as a separate species, Carpinus henryana . The genus name Carpinus comes from Latin and was already used by the Romans for the hornbeam.

One can distinguish between three varieties:

  • Carpinus henryana var. Henryana : It occurs in Sichuan .
  • Carpinus henryana var. Oblongifolia (Hu) Rushforth : It occurs in the Chinese province of Hubei .
  • Carpinus henryana var. Simplicidentata (Hu) Rushforth : It occurs in the Chinese province of Hubei .
