Carrapateira is a village in the Bordeira municipality in southern Portugal . It is located in the Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina
history
Finds prove a settlement back to the Paleolithic .
The present place was built in the 12th century during the Reconquista .
In 1673 a fortress was built here, which served to defend the coast against the Moorish pirates from what is now Morocco . Whaling was later operated from here .
The independent municipality of Carrapateira was dissolved in 1848 and incorporated into the municipality of Bordeira.
Culture and sights
Praia do Amado beach is part of Carrapateira and is very popular with surfers and bodyboarders .
The Maritime and Local History Museum Museu do Mar e da Terra on Rua do Pescador in Carrapateira opened in 2008.
The Carrapateira primary school is also a listed building .
A Portuguese circular hiking trail leads through Carrapateira. It is part of the Fisherman's Trail , one of the most famous trails in the network of trails in the Vicentine Coast Natural Park .
Bird watching is possible in and around Carrapateira .
