Carthage Township is located in the southeast of Athens County in southeast Ohio, is in the southwest about 10 km from the Ohio River and is bordered clockwise by the townships: Rome Township , Troy Township , Olive Township in Meigs County , Orange Township (Meigs County), Bedford Township (Meigs County), Lodi Township, and Canaan Township .

The township is administered by a Board of Trustees consisting of three elected members. Two people are elected in the year after the presidential election and one in the year before. The term of office usually lasts four years and begins on January 1st. There is also a township clerk (secretary), who is also elected for a four-year term in the year before the presidential election. His term of office begins on April 1st.
