Caryotophora skiatophytoides is the only type of monotypic genus Caryotophora from the family of aizoaceae (Aizoaceae). The botanical name of the genus is derived from the Greek words karyon for 'nut' and -phora for 'carrier' and refers to the nut-like fruits.
description
Caryotophora skiatophytoides is a low- growing perennial plant . It forms rhizomes up to 1 meter long and up to 23 millimeters in diameter at depths of 5 to 20 centimeters . Their internodes are 10 to 20 millimeters apart. The alternate or opposite, flat, dark green leaves are 6 to 12 centimeters long and 1 to 3 centimeters wide on the main shoot. On the side shoots they have a length of 4 to 6 centimeters and a width of 1 to 3 centimeters. Bladder cells are absent.
The white flowers appear annually in large inflorescences. The flower stalk is 3 to 6 inches long. There are five sepals . The nectarium forms an inconspicuous lophomorphic ring. The hard, woody capsule fruits are three to fourfold. The fruits contain six to eight black, more or less triangular seeds 2 to 3 millimeters in length.
Systematics and distribution
Caryotophora skiatophytoides is distributed in South Africa on the coast at Cape Agulhas near Bredasdorp in the Western Cape Province . It grows on sandy coastal plains near the sea in areas with year-round rainfall of more than 400 millimeters.
The first description of the genus and its only species by Otto Albrecht Leistner was published in 1958.
The only difference between the genus Caryotophora and the genus Skiatophytum is the wooden fruits.
