Casals (brand)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Casals is a Spanish brand name that goes back to the company of the same name founded by Francesc Casals i Fransoy in Ripoll in 1881 .

The company became known for the manufacture of building and industrial fans , power tools and garden tools. It produced a wide range of products, with the top and flat dowel milling machines being the most popular in German-speaking countries. The production areas of electrical appliance manufacture (today; Talleres Casals or Casals Power Tools ) and blower manufacture (today Casals Ventilación ) were taken over by two different corporate groups. Casals as a brand name remained in place with divergent brand logos .

history

The company was founded in 1881 by Francesc Casals i Fransoy in the center of Ripoll, a town in the province of Girona, as a machine repair shop.

From the workshop to a successful family business

The children also joined their father's company, which then called itself Francesc Casals i fills from 1902 and, after the death of Francesc Casals, then in Casals Germans ( Catalan for Casals siblings ) or Casals Hnos in Spanish . ( Hnos. = Hermanos ) was renamed.

In 1909 the move to the Carrer Dr. Raguer , back in Ripoll. At the same time, a foundry for the manufacture of casting tools and machine parts was founded, which was no longer sufficient for production just a few years later. The family business developed into an important tool and mechanical engineering company.

In 1918 the factory in Estamariu , the Casals-Werke ( Talleres Casals ), was built. In 1924, the mass production of industrial fans began. At that time Casals was one of the pioneers in this field. The Casals brand soon gained national recognition through the series production of industrial fans, power tools and kitchen appliances. In 1939/1940 the family business was one of the most important industrial companies in the Ter region between Ripoll and Roda de Ter .

Casals as a stock corporation

On September 14, 1940, the company was the corporation Talleres Casals, SA restructured. In the mid-1970s, Talleres Casals, SA was listed in Frederick Thomas Jane's yearbooks Major Companies of Europe . A company information from 1975 indicates that the products were exported to more than 50 countries worldwide at that time. In 1978 a second plant was opened, mainly for fan production.

After an economic bankruptcy in 1985, the family of the Italian entrepreneur Giampaolo Pozzo invested in 1986 and became the main stake in the company. In 1987, 300 people were employed in power tool production. This enabled the traditional power tool company to withstand competition from internationally active competitors such as Black & Decker and Bosch . The entire production of Casals manufactured under full capacity.

At the beginning of the 21st century, the company was hit by competition from the Asian region, which offered its products on the European market at significantly lower prices. In 2008 Casals still employed around 250 people. After the company got into financial difficulties as a result of the global economic crisis, 79 of the 116 employees in power tool production were laid off in 2008. For example, sales in the United States , which previously accounted for around half of sales, had fallen sharply.

The Pozzos were forced to give up their majority stake in Casals. The search for investors led to the split of the company.

Casals Power Tools

(also Herramientas Eléctricas Casals , translated: Casals power tools )
The Pozzos initially sold their Freud brand to Bosch and at the end of 2009, 75% of the entire Casals power tool division including trademark rights went to the Taurus Group after the power tool division went bankrupt . The Russian Interskol Group announced the takeover of the power tool industry in April 2009. After review and approval by the Comisiones Obreras (CC.OO.) union , Interskol took over 51% of the company's shares and the remaining 60 or so employees in power tool production in July 2010. Interskol, which also became the main shareholder in the Italian company Felisatti , moved Felisatti to the Ripoll location. In mid-2015, the Casals machine factory was completely taken over by Felisatti for 2.2 million euros. Of the 65 employees there, 54 were laid off.

Casals Ventilación

Most of the fan and ventilation system production in Sant Joan Despí was taken over by Aerólica, a company of the France Air group, in 2010/2011 and the Pozzos retained a minority stake in the company. The export share of the corporate division was 40% at that time.

Today more than 100 fan series and turbines are produced on a factory area of 12,000 m² . The export share now amounts to 60%.
