Cascade (grape variety)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cascade is a red wine variety newly bred by the French breeder Albert Seibel at the beginning of the 20th century . It is a cross between Seibel 7042 and Seibel 5409 and belongs to the large family of Seibel vines . It is an extremely complex breed in which genes from the wild grapes Vitis labrusca , Vitis riparia , Vitis rupestris , Vitis aestivalis , Vitis cinerea , Vitis berlandieri and Vitis vinifera are present. Cascade is therefore one of the hybrid vines . It has hermaphroditic flowers and is therefore self-fruiting. In viticulture , the economic disadvantage of not having to grow male plants that produce yield is avoided. The variety was marketed from 1938.

Cascade is precocious, with high fungus resistance against the Echten- , the downy mildew as well as against by Botrytis cinerea caused bunch rot . On the other hand, it is susceptible to viral vine diseases. This strain is especially suitable for cooler areas. Depending on how it is matured , the result is a light red, fragrant wine that has an unpleasant Fox tone . The wine is therefore usually only used in blends with other grape varieties. Vineyards are known in England and in the northeast of the USA (there in particular in the Willamette Valley ).

Since it is a hybrid vine , cultivation was banned in the EU in the 1950s and may only be cultivated in experimental cultivation. Previously it was used to a limited extent in the Anjou region , part of the Loire wine-growing region .
