The Caserma Nino Bixio , also Gran quarters di Pizzofalcone or Presidio di Pizzofalcone called, is a barracks in Naples . It is located on the hill of Pizzofalcone in the San Ferdinando district . It is named after the freedom fighter, general and politician Nino Bixio .

history

The barracks are located on the site of the ancient villa of the Roman general Lucius Licinius Lucullus . In the Middle Ages there was a falconry here , which gave the place its current name. Later, the Palazzo Carafa di Santa Severina was built on the site , in which the Reale Officio Topografico of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies , founded in 1781, was housed, and later a military archive . Between 1667 and 1670 the barracks, which still exist today, were built in the gardens of the complex. Since the Kingdom of Naples belonged to the Spanish crown at the time, Spanish and later Neapolitan troops were housed here. After the unification of Italy in 1861, Bersaglieri and other army units were billeted here. After the Second World War, the Polizia di Stato took over the barracks and housed riot police units there until the beginning of the 21st century .

future

On November 15, 2014 the Minister of the Interior Angelino Alfano , the Minister of Defense Roberta Pinotti , the Mayor of Naples Luigi de Magistris and the head of the state real estate agency Agenzia del Demanio signed an agreement with which the barracks as part of a major real estate exchange from the city of Naples to the Ministry of Defense passes over, which it is left to the neighboring, traditional Scuola Militare Nunziatella . In cooperation with the Istituto Italiano per gli Studi Filosofici , which is also in the vicinity , with which Nunziatella has been cooperating for some time, and the Parthenope University , a cultural center is to be created on site and thus give the entire district new impetus. The barracks still to be converted and renovated will house the two libraries of the military school and the institute mentioned. The school management of Nunziatella will remain at the previous location, a former Jesuit convent.
