Life

Caspar Tieffenbrucker came from a well-known family of instrument makers. From 1539 he spent years as a journeyman in Italy, probably with a relative, before he returned to Füssen in 1544 and in April of the same year obtained citizenship through marriage. From November 1553 he is documented in Lyon, where he spent most of his life. Tieffenbrucker is considered to be the founder of the French lute making school and was probably also one of the first violin makers to produce the violin there in the form it is used today. In 1558 he received the citizenship of Lyon.

Violins by Caspar Tieffenbrucker are rarely found today, most of the known instruments are replicas of Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume's from the 19th century. His son Caspar II. Tieffenbrucker (before 1570 – after 1582) worked as a lute and violin maker in Paris from the death of his father, most recently in rue Pot-de-Fer.

Caspar Tieffenbrucker was a. a. Teacher of Johann Helmer , lute and violin maker in Leipzig.
