Life

After an apprenticeship in his father's unicorn pharmacy in Gelnhausen, Cassebeer worked as a pharmacy assistant in Mainz, Salzwedel, Gandersheim and Berlin, where he devoted himself particularly to chemistry and botany.

He was not only a pharmacist, but also became a city councilor and honorary mayor of Gelnhausen several times in 1814. In 1830 he founded a branch pharmacy in Biebergemünd-Bieber in addition to the pharmacy he had inherited in Gelnhausen. The pharmacy in Gelnhausen was sold together with a profitable alcohol factory after the death of his wife. Cassebeer was also a member of the state parliament of his district in Kassel for several years.

He died in 1850 and was buried in Biebergemünd-Bieber.

Cassebeer was active in many scientific fields and corresponded with numerous renowned naturalists of his time. He made particular merits in mineralogy and geology . Cassebeer paid special attention to the cryptogams of the Vogelsberg , Wetterau and Spessarts .

His research results did not appear closed and his scientific legacy is only partially preserved. Cassebeer wrote various scientific articles and published a book on the development of deciduous mosses. In addition, in 1844, together with L. Pfeiffer, he published an “overview of the wild-growing and naturalized plants observed in Kurhessen” .

Above all, he studied the flowerless plants ( cryptogams ), for which he was awarded several times, for example with an honorary doctorate in pharmacy from the University of Marburg. Cassebeer made the first inventory of the national nature of his region, with which he laid the foundation stone for a natural scientific study of the North Spessart with his botanical and geoscientific contributions .

Cassebeer is considered to be the co-founder of the Wetterau Society for Natural History, which was established in Hanau in 1808 .
