Cassia aldabrensis is a species of the genus Cassia ( Cassia ) within the legume family (Fabaceae). It is endemic to the Aldabra group .

Vegetative characteristics

Cassia aldabrensis is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of up to 30 centimeters. The stems are reddish-brown and wiry. The pinnate leaves are up to 4 millimeters long with many small leaflets .

Generative characteristics

The hermaphroditic flowers are up to 1.2 centimeters wide, slightly zygomorphic and five-fold with a double flower envelope . The petals are yellow. The hairy, elongated legume up to 3 centimeters long pops up when ripe.

Occurrence and endangerment

Cassia aldabrensis is found on Assomption and on all main islands of the Aldabra Atoll, except in the western part of Grand Terre. The habitat are crevices in limestone floors and pointed carts .

Cassia aldabrensis is threatened by guano and phosphate degradation. In the list of threatened species of the IUCN , Cassia aldabrensis was rated as "vulnerable" = "endangered" in 1998; a new data collection is required.
