Castanopsis crassifolia is a species of tree fromthe beech family (Fagaceae) that occurs in Southeast Asia. The nuts are edible.

Castanopsis crassifolia is a tree . The leaves are lanceolate or oblong-lanceolate, rarely elliptical or ovate.

The fruit cups (cupulae) are studded with simple spikes . The spines are straight, close together and completely cover the surface of the fruit cup. The fruit cups, including the spines, are a maximum of four centimeters in diameter, usually 2.5 to 4 centimeters. On the adaxial side of young fruit cups, a bare, narrow stripe runs from the tip to the base.

Flowering time is from January to November, mostly from July to December. The fruit ripens from January to December, mostly March to August.

Distribution and locations

The species occurs in Thailand , China and Vietnam . It grows in evergreen lowland forests, in pine - oak forests and deeper evergreen mountain forests, often near rivers and at 200 to 1600 m above sea level, mostly at 1050 to 1300 m.
