Castel Pergine

Castel Pergine (German Burg Persen ) is a castle in the northern Italian province of Trento , which is located in the east above the city of Pergine Valsugana . It is possible that there was already a system from Roman times in its place . Because of its strategic position, the square was also used in the Middle Ages.

The current castle was built in the late Gothic style.

history

The first evidence of a castle at this point date from the year 845. In the 12th century, the castle belonged to the Lords of Pergine, changed hands several times and passed to the Habsburgs under Margaret of Tyrol . In 1531 they donated the castle to the bishop of Trento Bernhard von Cles . Until 1905 the castle belonged to the diocese of Trento, which left it to its governors for use ( Firmian , Madruzzo , Wolkenstein , the last governor was Antonio Giuseppe Girardi).

From 1805 until 1905 it was leased to farming families. During this time the castle deteriorated more and more. In March 1905 was of an anti-Semitic nationalist-minded from the Munich publisher Julius Friedrich Lehmann acquired initiated Aktiengesellschaft, which began to restore the facility and in the castle instituted a hotel and a restaurant in 1906 by the historian and later Christian Social Chancellor Michael Mayr , a leading member of the German national Tyrolean Volksbund . The work had to be interrupted in 1913. In 1920 the municipality of Pergine acquired the castle, but in 1956 it was forced to sell it again to Mario Oss, a Swiss native from Pergine.

The Oss family had Castel Pergine renovated and set up a hotel and restaurant there. In the summer months, the castle was also used as an exhibition space for art exhibitions. After it became known in 2017 that the castle was for sale and the municipality of Pergine was unable to buy it, private individuals set up a committee and then a charitable foundation with the aim of purchasing the castle. At the end of 2018, Castel Pergine was transferred to this non-profit foundation, supported by over 800 people and around 50 institutions and associations.
