The Castello Cantelmo is the ruin of a hilltop castle on the Guardiola hill in the Italian municipality of Pettorano sul Gizio in the province of L'Aquila . It lies above the Gizio and Peligna valleys .

history

Inside of the castle ruins

Although there are no reliable sources, it is believed that the castle was built around the 11th century as an extension of the existing central observation tower, which was part of a defensive system made up of castles such as Castello Ducale Cantelmo , the Castello Caldora in Pacentro , the Castle in Raiano , the Castle in Vittorito , the Castle in Prezza and the Castello Normanno in Anversa .

During the Norman domination at the end of the 12th century, the castle was a fief of Oddo , son of Oddone di Pettorano . The fiefdom extended from the Gizio valley to the Cinquemiglia plateau and from the Sangro valley to Ateleta .

After the battle of Benevento in 1310, Charles I of Naples gave this fief to the Cantelmo family , who kept it until 1750. Then the castle fell to the Tocco family from Montemiletto , who held it until 1806.

In 1992 the buildings, which had now belonged to the municipality of Pettorano sul Gizio, were rebuilt and restored by the Soprintendenza per i Beni Architettonici dell'Aquila , which turned them into a modern museum.

description

The castle ruins have an irregular floor plan with cylindrical towers on the north-west and south-west corners, as well as on the north-east corner (integrated into a private house there). In the south-east the remains of a tower with a square plan have been preserved. The walls are characterized by a moat that extends all the way around the castle and the only openings are small slits.

The pentagonal keep in the middle is the oldest part of the castle. Its entrance is raised and can be reached via a spiral staircase .

The interior of the castle was rebuilt and today consists of a meeting room and numerous exhibition rooms.
