The Castello Giudiziario di Derby , Castello Giudiziale or Casaforte di Derby is a permanent house and in the Middle Ages was the judicial center of the spiritual rule of Derby , today a district of La Salle in the Aosta Valley . It is only one of the permanent houses in Derby, together with the Castello Notarile di Derby one of the worth preserving.
history
The house, built in the 13th century, originally belonged to the canons of Aosta , but it is not known whether these were the canons of Sant'Orso or those of the cathedral.
description
The castle is a massive building with a square floor plan and three floors; there are remains of an enclosing wall (or an enclosure) with a circular segment corner tower that has some loopholes : According to Carlo Nigra , it is assumed that there were probably two corner towers originally.
The entrance, which is only a few feet higher, is protected by a portcullis . Originally, the various floors could only be reached via a Capuchin staircase: the spiral staircase was installed later.
In the cellars, which had been converted into a prison, criminals were brought to justice and left here if they were found guilty. Wood theft is also mentioned among the legal violations for which one could be brought to justice.
According to legend, an underground corridor should lead from Castello Giudiziario to Castello Notarile di Derby in the same street.
Today the building is a farm.
