In its greatest extension, the Spornburg took an extension of 180 m in an east-west direction and 100 m in a north-south direction. A 500 m long and up to four meters thick wall enclosed the approximately 1.3 hectare interior. It was dominated by the 25 × 15 meter, multi-storey rectangular keep and eight smaller square defense towers with a floor area of 16-25 m² each. These were attached to the wall in front of the wall.

history

The castle was built in the 9th century during the Muslim influence under ʿUmar ibn Hafsūn .

Around 1250 it was by King Ferdinand III. conquered and in the following years Christianized the area . In the early 14th century it came into Muslim possession again before it finally came to the Spanish crown in 1341 under King Alfonso the Avenger . In 1408 and 1445 the castle was bought by the emir of Granada , Yusuf III. (1408) and Yusuf V. (1445) besieged unsuccessfully .

Around 1800 the complex was abandoned and fell into disrepair. The former residents moved to the planned Prado del Rey, one kilometer to the south .

The entire castle complex has been a national monument since 1949, and has been a listed building since 1985.

Today the area is privately owned and mainly serves as a pasture for cattle. Occasionally, due to its exposed location, it is also used as a helicopter landing pad.

In 2013, heavy rain damaged the tower, which then partially collapsed. The tower has been extensively renovated, but the use of conspicuous building materials that are not listed as a historical monument has met with broad criticism.
