history
The in 14./15. The castle was built in the 16th century by the Albuquerque family , who at that time had great influence in the region, and served as a border fortress - despite the final unification of the two kingdoms of Castile and León in 1230. Already during the Comuneros uprising (1520-1522) it served the rebels as a base. Later it was used as a warehouse for grain etc. It was restored at the beginning of the 21st century and now functions as the Centro de Interpretación de la Edad Media y de los castillos .
architecture
The castle with its walls up to 4 m thick and 20 m high with incompletely preserved battlements ( almenaje ) is built on an almost square floor plan. It has four corner towers and four more round towers along the outer walls ( cortinas ); the corner tower to the right of the portal is pentagonal and probably served as a keep ( torre del homenaje ). The coat of arms of the House of Albuquerque is placed above the small, unadorned portal ; above it is a weir bay ( ladronera ). On the outer walls of the inner courtyard ( corte ) there were stables and storage rooms on the ground floor that were once built using timber frame technology , as well as lounges and bedrooms for the guards; above it ran a circular battlement ( camino de ronda ).
Others
The castle served as the backdrop for some scenes in the 1960 film El Cid with Charlton Heston and Sophia Loren (directed by Anthony Mann ).
