Cat Scratch Fever is the third solo album by rock guitarist Ted Nugent . The album was released in 1977 through Epic Records .

Origin background

After the two very successful albums Ted Nugent (1975) and Free-for-All (1976) Tom Werman worked for the third time with Ted Nugent. The session started with the theme song Cat Scratch Fever , which also became Nugent's first single . The title of the song and the album is the English term for the cat-scratch disease and was influenced by a medicine book that belonged to his wife at the time, an antique dealer. Nugent adopted the title as a nod to his well-known predilection for hunting. He used to shoot wild cats entering his property at this point.

The album was recorded with Derek St. Holmes (guitar), Cliff Davies (drums) and Rob Grange (bass). Both Nugent and Derek St. Holmes did the singing.

Music and lyrics

Ted Nugent was known as an extroverted soloist on the guitar. Accordingly, his rock or hard rock music is heavily geared towards the guitar and kept quite demanding. It was only on this album that he had songs that also appealed to a more mass-oriented audience, especially the title track. The lyrics of the album are formulated ambiguously and full of sexual allusions. Some of them are written quite roughly.

Cat Scratch Fever is widely considered to be the best and most famous album by Nugent. It is also the last studio album in the existing line-up, as the accompanying band broke up shortly afterwards due to personal differences.

The album itself missed the charts. The single Cat Scratch Fever was released as a single in 1977 together with the album track Wang Dang Sweet Poontang and placed at number 30 on the US Billboard Hot 100 .

Republished in 1999

The album was remastered in 1999 for Sony Music Entertainment's Legacy Edition . Bruce Dickinson took over the production . The liner notes for the album were written by journalist Gary Graff (author of the book Music Hound Essential Album Guide ). The re-release contains two live versions from a live recording at the Hammersmith Odeon in London in 1977. These are left in a raw mix.
