Caterina Pascual Söderbaum
Caterina Pascual Söderbaum (born September 10, 1962 in Lleida , Spain ; † December 24, 2015 ) was a Spanish-Swedish writer and translator .
Life
Caterina Pascual Söderbaum was born in 1962 in Lleida, Catalonia, to a Spanish father and a Swedish mother. She spent her childhood together with her two sisters in Barcelona , Cartagena , Maó and Girona . After graduating from high school, she moved to Uppsala to live with her grandmother in order to train as a translator and interpreter at Uppsala University . She then worked as a literary translator from Swedish and English into Spanish and Catalan, translating authors such as Selma Lagerlöf , Kjell Westö , Peter Englund and Steve Sem-Sandberg .
From the mid-1990s she lived in both Girona and Uppsala and began writing her first novel. She made her debut as a writer with Sonnets om andningen in 2001 and was awarded the Katapult Prize for the best Swedish literary debut the following year .
For her posthumously published novel Den skeva platsen (German: Der Schiefe Platz), she was awarded the Swedish Radio Novel Prize in 2017, Sveriges Radios Romanpris . The novel is a chronicle of the 19th century in Europe. Her personal connection to the troubled history of Europe was also important for her choice of topic : Caterina Pascual Söderbaum's paternal grandfather was a volunteer in the German Wehrmacht , her father served under Franco , her mother was related to the Swedish-German actress Kristina Söderbaum .
In December 2015, Söderbaum died at the age of 53 after years of illness. She left behind the 2001 born daughter Rita, her mother and two sisters.
