The Cathedral of Nice ( French Cathédrale Sainte-Réparate de Nice ) is a Roman Catholic church in the city of Nice in the south of France . The Cathedral of the Diocese of Nice was dedicated to the Assumption and St. Dedicated to Reparata . The building from the 17th century was continued until 1949. The cathedral has been recognized as a monument historique since 1906 .

history

The first cathedral in Nice was dedicated to the Assumption and was built in the 5th century within the fortified city on the castle hill; the single-nave Cathédrale Sainte-Marie de Cimiez initially had a square apse, which was replaced by a semicircular one in the Carolingian era ; it was equipped with a baptistery . In the 11th century the church was enlarged to three naves and consecrated in 1049 after the work was completed. The church, damaged by cracks, was rebuilt between 1429 and 1486. It received a large choir with a crypt underneath and several side chapels . After the bishopric was moved to the church of Santa Reparata in 1531, the old cathedral became the castle church. In 1706 it was used as part of the castle by French artillery on the orders of Louis XV. severely damaged.

The church of Santa Reparata was built on the spot where in 1078 the citizen Raimbald Rostagni built a chapel for the relics of St. Reparata that he had brought from Rome. Located at the foot of the Schlossberg outside the city of that time, it became the oratory of the Benedictine Abbey of Saint-Pons in 1185 and, after extensive reconstruction, the parish seat in 1246. Now part of the growing city, it was expanded between 1455 and 1468. The church was ceded to the Diocese of Nice by the Saint-Pons Abbey in 1531 to become a cathedral; In 1533 the transfer was accepted by the Dukes of Savoy and ratified in 1590.

In 1649, Bishop Desiderio Palletta commissioned Giovanni Andrea Guiberto to design the new cathedral; he directed the work from 1650 to 1680. As early as 1651, both the transept and the dome could be completed, the bell tower of the old church was demolished. In 1655 the corridor collapsed and injured Bishop Palletta; the work then proceeded more slowly. Bishop Enrico Provana von Leyni resumed construction in 1673, which was carried out from 1685 under the direction of Marc 'Antonio Grigho. The cathedral was consecrated in May 1699 by Bishop Provana of Leyni.

The bell tower was built by Carlo Antonio Castelli (supported by Carlo Gioanetti) in the years 1731–1757 at the behest of Bishop Raymond Recrosio († 1732). The facade was only built between 1825 and 1830 based on the original drawings by Giovanni Andrea Guiberto. In 1899, Bishop Henri-Louis Chapon changed the choir area by extending the side aisles beyond the transept and replacing the formerly heavy baroque ornaments with new side chapels; the semicircular apse was built between 1900 and 1903. In 1906 the cathedral was declared a historical monument of France, in 1949 Pope Pius XII raised it. it to the Basilica minor.

inner space

Above the high altar is a picture of the glory of St. Reparata, the virgin martyr to whom the cathedral is dedicated and whose relics have been kept here since 1690. The interior, designed in the Genoese Baroque style , includes ten chapels. The chapels are of Our Lady of the Seven Sufferings, the Crucifixion , St. Rosa von Lima , the hll. Alexander of Rome and Bartholomew , the Holy Sacrament, St. Rosalia and the Virgin Mary , St. Joseph , St. Reparata, the four crowned martyrs and dedicated to John the Baptist . By the end of the 17th century, each of the chapels was linked to a different guild , each with the responsibility and cost of its maintenance.
