Catherine Pierre

Catherine Pierre (born September 7, 1957 ) is a former French judoka . She won a bronze medal at world championships and was a five-time European champion.

Athletic career

Catherine Pierre fought until 1979 in the light heavyweight division, the weight class up to 72 kilograms. In 1975, 1976 and 1977 she was French light heavyweight champion, in 1976, 1978 and 1979 she won the open class. She won her seventh championship title in 1980 in the middleweight division, the weight class up to 66 kilograms.

In 1975 the first European championships for women were held in Munich . In the light heavyweight division, Catherine Pierre won ahead of the German Rebecca Küttner , in the open class she won over her compatriot Paulette Fouillet . At the European Championships in 1976 in Vienna she defended her light heavyweight title in front of Marianne Promegger from Austria, in the open class she received the bronze medal. The third European Championships were held in Arlon in 1977 . Catherine Pierre won her third light heavyweight title from Spain's Concepción Costa . As in the previous year, she won the bronze medal in the open class, while her compatriot Jocelyne Triadou won gold . In 1978 at the European Championships in Cologne she reached the final in the light heavyweight division again, where she was defeated by the German Barbara Claßen . The following year she reached the final in the open class at the 1979 European Championships in Kerkrade, where she lost to Barbara Claßen.

In 1980 Catherine Pierre switched to middleweight division. In March at the European Championships in Udine, she won the title in this weight class by beating the Italian Nadia Amerighi in the final . At the end of November 1980, New York City hosted the first World Judo Championships for women. The French women won a medal in the competitions in each of the eight weight classes. Catherine Pierre won a bronze middleweight medal. After losing to Edith Simon from Austria in the semifinals , she won the battle for bronze against the Japanese Hiromi Fukuda . In 1982, Catherine Pierre was second again in the French championships behind Claudette Dekarz .
