Catherine de Valois

Catherine de Valois (* 1428 ; † July 1446 in Brussels ), also Catherine de France , was a French princess and Countess of Charolais by marriage .

Life

Catherine was born as the second daughter and thus fourth child of the French King Charles VII and his wife Marie d'Anjou . When she was twelve, she was married on May 19, 1440 in Saint-Omer, Flanders, to the only legitimate son of Duke Philip the Good of Burgundy, Charles the Bold , Count of Charolais. Catherine was distantly related to him, as both had the same great-great-grandfather in King John II of France . The marriage contract was already on September 30, 1438 Blois was signed and part of the agreements in 1435 between the French Kingdom and the Burgundy Duchy in the Treaty of Arras had been established. The marriage was intended to bring the two families of the Valois and Burgundy houses closer together again. Karl was only seven years old at the time of the marriage.

Catherine died at the age of 17 in July 1446 in Brussels, before she had had a child from Charles, and was buried in the Cathedral of St. Michel et Gudule in August of that year .
