Catstone Hill

The Catstone Hill is a hill in the Pentland Hills . The 448 m high elevation lies in the center of the southern part of the approximately 25 km long range of hills in the Scottish Council Area Scottish Borders .

The closest localities are West Linton and the hamlet of Dunsyre , each five kilometers away in the east and south-west. The surrounding hills include the Millstone Rig in the northwest, Craigengar in the north, King Seat in the east, Mendick Hill in the southeast and Bleak Law in the southwest.

Surroundings

Several streams arise on the flanks of the Catstone Hills. Two brooks flowing down from the north and east flanks flow into the main tributary of the West Water Reservoir . The reservoir itself lies at the foot of the eastern slopes of the Catstone Hills. It was built in 1969 to supply regional water.

To the southeast of the hill are two cairns of unknown age. Neolithic artifacts have also been discovered in this area . In addition to the remains of various worked stones that served as tools, shards of food vessels were exposed.

When the tide is low, various islands form in the West Water Reservoir. As a result of erosion, a Bronze Age cemetery was uncovered on one of the islands , which has been comprehensively archaeologically recorded and documents the early use of the hill.

On Medwin Water, which runs along the southwest flank, there is a place known as "Roger's Kirk" in records at the foot of the Catstone Hills. It is not certain whether this was a chapel. Although there is a drawing of a ruined chapel, a building at this location seems improbable. The cairns could also have been used as a gathering place for covenanters under this name . It is possible that only one gorge was named that way.
