Ponte 4 de Abril in Catumbela

The 260 km long river has its source in the province of Huíla on the border with the province of Benguela about 10 km north of the city of Caconda . It initially flows for a few kilometers in a south-westerly direction, then swings to the northwest, only to flow north for about 30 km shortly after the border in the province of Benguela. Near Ganda it changes its course again and describes a wide arc to the west. About 40 km before the mouth, it bends sharply in a north-northwest direction, only to swivel back to the west 20 km later. It flows into the Atlantic in the city of Catumbela .

Catchment area

In Portuguese times the catchment area was given as 14,120 km². More recent calculations, which were carried out in 2005, however, showed a size of 16,532 km².

Energy generation

The Biópio power plant

The catchment area of the Catumbela has a relatively large gradient. The two power plants Biopio and Lomaum were built early on . In the course of this, three more power plants were planned for the Catumbela: Calengue, Calindo and Capitongo.
