Cause for Effect is a Finnish band from Tampere , which was founded in 1992 under the name Cause and Effect . Their music is a mixture of grindcore and jazz .

history

The band was founded in the spring of 1992 by drummer Ari and bassist and singer Tuomo under the name Cause and Effect. In the first two months they developed the first songs together until guitarist Helge joined the band in August 1992. In September Samu joined as a second guitarist. In the beginning the band was more or less oriented towards Thrash Metal . In October the group recorded their first self-titled demo. At the beginning of 1993 the band only consisted of three members after Samu's departure and developed in the direction of hardcore / metal crossover . In November the band recorded a second demo called Xylitol Friend . Four months later the third demo followed with Back , which included new songs and some songs from the second demo.

In 1994 the band developed increasingly towards Grindcore . In the summer of the year the band changed their name to Cause for Effect, as a band already existed with the name Cause and Effect. In February 1995 the band recorded another demo. After a few more rehearsals, the band recorded another demo with the same songs in April. Since the band was still not satisfied with the result, a third demo followed in June, which however also contained a few new songs. The demo was named Fast, Angry and Nimble . Since Tuomo had sent the demo back to various magazines during 1994 , the band reached a contract with Merwi Records , Freak Animal Records and Tylyt Levyt , with which the split release Cause for Effect / Noise Waste appeared in 1995. The sound carrier contained songs by the band Noise Waste , as well as songs from the back demo. The release was limited to 500 copies and was the first official release of the band. In 1996, the compilation No Fate appeared on the Japanese label HG Fact Records . The compilation included the song Not Gloomy by Fast, Angry and Nimble . In autumn 1996, Helge left the band. Tuomo's brother Jamu joined the band as session guitarist, who held this position until 1999. The band rehearsed new songs that were now faster and more technically demanding. In February 1997 the band recorded five new songs for compilation. They also recorded the songs from Fast, Angry and Nimble again, so that the demo was released under the name Nuclear Blues in 1997 on the Spanish label Underground Records . The compilation was released by Tylyt Levyt in the same year.

In May 1997, the band returned to the studio to record eleven new songs, five of which were newly recorded versions of songs from the previously released compilation. The rest were new songs. The recordings took place in Fantom Studio under the direction of Janne Jokinen . The songs were released on the split release Cause for Effect / Utter Bastard in January 1998 via Tylyt Levyt. In October 1997 the band got their own rehearsal room in Tampere. Since the rehearsals had previously taken place in Jamus' room and he now lived too far away, Janne Jokinen helped out as guitarist for two months. After that, Jamu came back as a session guitarist, but this was only limited to appearances.

Ari and Tuomo worked on new material from October 1997 to September 1998. They then went to Janne's studio to record their debut album, Fast Material . Tuomo not only recorded the tracks for the bass, but also for the electric guitar. During the recordings, 32 songs were created, a few of which were new recordings of the split release with Utter Bastard . In October 1998, Ari, Tuomo and Jamu held their first European tour together with the Finnish band Incriminated and the German band Amnion, which lasted until November. The release of Fast material was planned for early 1999th However, this was not possible due to financial problems on the part of Tylyt Levyt. The band was looking for a new label and found it in the spring of 1999 with Ecocentric Records . The album was released in 2000, but Ari and Tuomo were just a duo at the time of release and were already working on new material without an electric guitar, since Jamu had left the band in early 1999. At first Tuomo and Ari tried to find a suitable replacement until they finally decided in August to continue the band as a duo. At the beginning of 1999 a split-release with the Czech band Onanizer was released on the Austrian label Machismo Productions , with the songs on Cause for Effect coming from Fast Material .

In November 1999, Ari and Tuomo went to the Fantom Studio and recorded 20 new songs over a weekend. The EP PQ-2 was recorded, mixed and mastered by Janne Jokinen. At the beginning of 2000, the duo started looking for a new label and found it with the Swedish label Ubble-Gubble Records . Since the EP wasn't released until 2001, the band was already working on new material and rehearsing about five to six times a week. During this time the band held only a few concerts. In June 2001 the second European tour followed with the hardcore punk band Valse Triste . The tour included appearances in Poland , Germany, the Czech Republic and Belgium . In December 2001 the band went to Jokinen's new studio, which Ari and Tuomo named Fusion Reactor. The band recorded the next album within four days and mixed and mastered the album during this period as well. The album called Album , whose name Jokinen chose, was released in the summer of 2002 on the Brazilian label Bucho Discos . In 2002 the band made appearances in Finland, including a November appearance with Napalm Death . In 2003 another gig with Rotten Sound , Entombed and Defleshed followed .

In May 2003, Ari and Tuomo went back to Jokinen's studio to record material for a split release. The band recorded 15 new songs in one weekend. The release of the split sound carrier never took place, so that the songs could not be published yet. In February 2004 the band recorded three more songs. The 18 songs were published as EP Professional 300 in summer 2004 via Bucho Discos.

In September 2003 the band held their third European tour together with the German band Gorilla Monsoon . The fourth tour through Europe followed in September of the next year and also played at a festival with Behemoth . In autumn 2005 the band reached a contract with Dies Irae Records and released the compilation 2001 - 2004 on June 6, 2006 with this label . The compilation included all songs on which only the duo Ari and Tuomo could be heard. In the summer of the year the band also played at the Tuska Open Air Metal Festival . Towards the end of the year Dies Irae Records became part of Stay Heavy Records , a larger Finnish label. The band went to the studio in November to record the next album. These 33 songs were recorded, mixed and mastered by Sammy Roiha . The album 0 + 1 = 01 was released in February 2007. In summer 2007 the band played three days in the evening club of the Tuska Open Air Metal Festival. Another appearance at the Finnish Metal Expo followed in February 2008 . More appearances followed for the rest of the year. Since 2007 the band has also been working on new songs. In winter 2009 the band broke their contract with Stay Heavy Records. In 2010 the band released the EP Progressive and Minimalist Recording in self- publication and made various live recordings available for download .

style

At first the music was strongly oriented towards Thrash Metal , with groups like Acid Reign and Sacred Reich being given as influences. In 1993 the style evolved into a hardcore punk / metal crossover. From 1994 the style became increasingly grindcore-oriented. Tuomo's singing style switched from hoarse shouting to deeper growls. In addition to Grindcore, the Finnish band Xysma was an important influence; as with Xysma, rock-heavy riffs were combined with fast blast beats. The American band Dead Kennedys was also an important influence, Tuomo in particular studied their guitar playing. Afterwards the band played a mixture of grindcore and jazz, whereby it is particularly characteristic that the duo manages without any use of an electric guitar.
