Cavedigger is an American documentary - short film by Jeffrey Karoff from the year 2013. It is about the artist Ra Paulette . At the Academy Awards in 2014 he was nominated in the Best Documentary Short Film category.

action

The film is about the artist Ra Paulette, who digs or cuts huge, decorated caves in sandstone in Northern New Mexico . He only uses hand tools. The artistic works are financed by patrons who usually envision smaller projects. But Paulette needs several years for his works of art and so conflicts with his sponsors arise again and again. In doing so, he often loses focus and insists on his artistic vision. At the end of the film, he introduces his magnum opus . He wants to sacrifice the last ten years of his life and do this work secretly on private property.

background

Jeffrey Karoff first heard about Paulette's art through the protagonists of his documentary Shel Nymark and Liz Riedel, who took him to one of Paulette's caves. He was very impressed with his work, but put the story off a bit and devoted himself to other projects until he heard from Nymark and Riedel about a conflict between Paulette and his patron.

The film was released in the United States on January 12, 2013 and screened internationally at several film festivals. By Alex Rotaru he was to shorten the originally 47 minutes long film to 40 minutes to do, so he the guidelines of the Oscar would fulfill jury with it. Sandra Ruch also gave him the tip so that the film could be shown as a short film at various festivals and thus take part in the competitions. In fact, the film was nominated for an Oscar, but lost to The Lady in Number 6 .
