Cornelis "Cees" Egas (born August 1, 1913 in Holwerd , Dongeradeel , province of Friesland ; † December 21, 2001 in Alkmaar , province of North Holland ) was a Dutch politician of the Sociaal-Democratische Arbeiderspartij (SDAP) and later the Partij van de Arbeid ( PvdA), who between 1965 and 1966 was State Secretary in the Cals cabinet in the Ministry of Culture, Leisure and Social Welfare.

Life

Egas was the son of the owner of an agricultural and livestock supply store and a teacher of home economics at the community college in Bakkeveen . After finishing school in 1926, at the age of 13, he began working as a farm worker. During this time he began to work as a member of the workers' youth center AJC (Arbeiders Jeugd Centrale) . In 1931 he joined the Sociaal-Democratische Arbeiderspartij (SDAP), of which he belonged until they merged with the Vrijzinnig Democratische Bond (VDB) and the Christelijk Democratische Unie (CDU) to form the Partij van de Arbeid (PvdA) on February 6, 1946. In addition, he attended the winter middle school for agriculture in Groningen until 1938 . Between 1941 and 1950 he was the agricultural overseer of the state farm in Noordoostpolder and from 1950 to 1965 he was an agricultural employee of the Wiardi Beckman Foundation (WBS), the scientific think tank of the PvdA. During this time he also attended the secondary school for economics and statistics until 1953.

On July 15, 1952, Egas became a member of the Second Chamber of the States General for the first time as a candidate for the PvdA and was a member of this until May 10, 1965. In the 21st legislative period he acted from October 2, 1963 to May 11, 1965 as chairman of the Standing Committee on Fisheries. During this time he was between March 6 and May 10, 1965 a member of the party executive committee of the PvdA. On April 27, 1962, he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of the Dutch Lion .

On May 10, 1965, Prime Minister Jo Cals appointed him State Secretary in the Ministry of Culture, Leisure and Social Welfare (Staatssecretaris van Cultuur, Recreatie en Maatschappelijk Werk) in his government and held this office until November 22, 1966. He was in this government Function particularly responsible for social welfare. Egas became commander of the Order of Orange-Nassau on December 5, 1966 .

As a candidate of the PvdA, Egas was again a member of the Second Chamber of the States General on February 23, 1967, to which he belonged until December 7, 1972. In this 22nd and 23rd legislative period he was from March 1, 1967 to December 7, 1972 Vice-Chairman of the Standing Chamber Committee for Culture, Leisure and Social Welfare. From November 25, 1967 to March 6, 1969, he was again a member of the PvdA's executive committee. After leaving Parliament, he attended courses in cultural anthropology, sociology, psychology and philosophy at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam between 1973 and 1976 .
