Center juridique franco-allemand

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Center juridique franco-allemand (CJFA) is a renowned institution of the Saarland University under the umbrella of the law faculty and is the only educational institution in Germany that can award a French university degree in law on German territory .

It offers German and French high school graduates a parallel study of German and French law with a license en droit degree . Until 2006, the CJFA awarded the DEUG Droit, which is still awarded today as an intermediate diploma.

history

The CJFA was founded in November 1955 as the Center d'Etudes Juridiques Françaises at a time when today's Saarland University was still a French university . Since February 15, 1948, there were already law courses at the university.

In the early years of the Center d'Etudes Juridiques Françaises only French people were taught, who were mainly children of the French administrative officials stationed in Saarland . The Center d'Etudes Juridiques Françaises remained when the Saarland University eventually became a German university . The course was opened to German students so that they could study German and French law at the same time as part of a double degree and, in addition to the legal state examination, could take a French university degree. It was renamed Center juridique franco-allemand.

The study at the CJFA lasted two years and ended with the French university diploma DEUG Droit. The courses were held in French by French university professors and lecturers. French and German students were taught together.

The fact that a German university awarded a French university degree was absolutely unique and was based on a new authorization issued by the French Ministry of Education in Paris for each year .

present

As part of the Bologna Process and the associated switch to Bachelor and Master degrees in France , the CJFA had to completely revise its Droit ( French for law ) course. As part of a partnership with the University of Paul Verlaine Metz , a third year of study has been offered since 2006, which ends with the License en droit (= French Bachelor). The DEUG Droit is still awarded as an intermediate diploma after two years of study.

Education

The first two years of study of the License en droit (L1 and L2) are completed by students in Saarbrücken on the campus of the Saarland University , the third year (L3) takes place in Saargemünd in France, which is bordering on Saarbrücken, as part of a partnership with Metz University. After two years of study, students receive the DEUG Droit, after three years of study they receive a double license en droit - one from the CJFA and one from the University of Metz.

Alternatively, the third year of study can also be attended at one of the other partner universities Panthéon-Assas (Paris II) or the University of Strasbourg (Strasbourg III). In this case, after three years of study, you only receive the license en droit of the respective partner university.

There are two options for studying at the CJFA:

  • Option A : Students who primarily practice French law and would like to complete French legal training

Structure of the CJFA

The Center juridique franco-allemand, which is headed by co-directors Philippe Cossalter and Claude Witz, is an institution that sees itself as a mediator between the legal cultures of Germany and France .

It consists of the administration of the CJFA with a general secretariat and two chairs of French law . The Saarland University is the only university in Germany that has two chairs for French law: the chair for French public law (Philippe Cossalter) and the chair for French civil law (Claude Witz). These two chairs promote the spread of French law in Germany, help to lay the foundations for an understanding of German law in France and thus make the CJFA a cultural mediator between the two legal systems.

In addition to the holders of the two French chairs , external French university professors and lecturers teach at the CJFA . Most of them come from the universities of Strasbourg, Nancy and Metz near the border .

Career prospects

Due to the bilingual training in two legal areas of member states of the European Union , graduates of the CJFA are mainly used as corporate lawyers, civil servants of the European Union and in international organizations . In the past, graduates of the CJFA were e.g. B. Ambassadors , employees of the European Commission or the European Court of Justice .
