Building of the Center Industrial IT (CIIT)
Ceremonial handover of a Fraunhofer training system for Industry 4.0 to a Chinese delegation in the SmartFactoryOWL (2018)

The Centrum Industrial IT (CIIT) is a research and development center for the use of IoT technologies in industrial intelligent automation based on the Industry-on-Campus model, the aim of which is joint research and the transfer of technology and knowledge between research institutions and the economy exists under one roof. The research and development center, which was created through a public-private partnership , is located on the Innovation Campus Lemgo in the middle of Ostwestfalen-Lippe , one of the most important regions for mechanical engineering and automation technology in Germany. Together with SmartFactoryOWL, a research and Demonstration factory of Fraunhofer IOSB-INA and the Technical University OWL , the CIIT forms the professional cluster for industrial automation in the it's OWL technology network .

meaning

The CIIT was selected in 2008 by the Innovation and Knowledge Initiative as a lead project in the East Westphalia-Lippe region. Since 2010 several hundred (2010 approx. 200, 2018 approx. 350) employees from science and industry have been working in an open partner platform under one roof on research and development issues in the field of industrial information technology for intelligent technical systems. This field of activity, called Industry 4.0 , has been included in the high-tech strategy by the federal government . The CIIT is a partner in the BMBF - Leading-Edge Cluster "Intelligent Technical Systems OstwestfalenLippe (it's OWL)" and, together with its members, forms one of three regional research and transfer centers.

In November 2012 the CIIT was named "Landmark in the Land of Ideas". In 2013 this was followed by the “Germany at its best” award from the North Rhine-Westphalian Ministry for Economic Affairs, Energy, Industry, Medium-Sized Enterprises and Crafts. In July 2014 the CIIT was named a " Place of Progress" by the NRW Ministry of Science. In 2016, the CIIT again received the award as an excellent place in the land of ideas.

The first building, completed in 2010, was expanded in 2016 by an equally large extension with a further 5,500 m² of usable space. The symbolic groundbreaking ceremony took place in March 2014. In June 2014, as a joint initiative by Fraunhofer and the OWL Technical University, the construction of a research factory for intelligent automation applications ( SmartFactoryOWL ) with approx. 2,000 m² of usable space in the immediate vicinity of the CIIT was announced. The company CIIT eV was founded in December 2015 to support the further expansion into a leading competence center.

Partner in the Industrial IT Center

Science and industry use the Center Industrial IT as a neutral cooperation, knowledge and transfer platform and thus form a competence center for intelligent automation and the design of digitization in industry ( Industry 4.0 ). Through joint projects, competencies in the field of intelligent technical systems are to be expanded and developed and the innovation process at the interface of science and industry optimized through the spatial proximity. The current network partners in CIIT cover the value chain for the creation of automation solutions in the research ( Fraunhofer IOSB-INA and the Institute for Industrial Information Technology (inIT) of the OWL Technical University ), technology suppliers ( Phoenix Contact Software and OWITA GmbH), automation manufacturers / suppliers ( Phoenix Contact GmbH & Co. KG , Weidmüller Interface GmbH & Co. KG , KEB Automation KG , MSF Vathauer Antriebstechnik GmbH & Co KG, Aventics and Bosch Rexroth ), system integration (ISI-Automation) and services ( TÜV Süd ). As a partner, OWL-Maschinenbau eV ensures networking with medium-sized mechanical and plant engineering companies.

Research and demonstration factory SmartFactoryOWL

Together with the Industrial IT Center, SmartFactoryOWL, which is operated by Fraunhofer IOSB-INA and the OWL Technical University, forms the cluster for industrial automation. In the research and demonstration factory, IoT technologies and processes for informatization of production engineering are tested and presented. This includes the use of information and communication technology (ICT), for example, for the implementation of a continuous flow of communication from the sensor on the machine to the Internet as well as for resource-efficient and versatile production and a user-friendly human-machine interface .
