Cereblon is a protein found in all animals . In humans, it is expressed in many types of tissue , but most of all in the brain . There it stabilizes certain potassium channels in the cell membrane and thus contributes to learning and the function of memory . Cereblon has another function during embryonic development , where it forms the substrate-binding subunit of a ubiquitin ligase , which regulates transcription and influences the growth of limbs. The medicinal substance thalidomide binds to Cereblon and probably disrupts the normal growth of the embryo ( thalidomide scandal ). Mutations in CRBN - gene can be inherited mild dementia lead due to learning and memory disorders.
