The Cerro de Guazapa is an extensive eroded stratovolcano in El Salvador . It is located in the municipality of Guazapa in the department of San Salvador about 20 kilometers northeast of San Salvador .
genesis
He was active in the Pleistocene . It rises about 1,000 meters above the surrounding landscape. Erosion has completely eroded the original summit crater and cut deep gorges into the basalt rock of its flanks. Several craters still active in the Holocene were found at the base . The Cerro Macanze , a cinder cone on the south-eastern base, may have been active a few thousand years ago.

The FAES have a transmitter on the summit of Cerros . In the vast area of Guazapamassivs was 1980-1992 FMLN - guerrilla presence. On July 8, 1981, 34 civilians from the Municipio Guazapa were murdered by the Policía de Hacienda . Between February 28 and March 1, 1983, civilians fleeing from the Guazapas region were murdered by government troops from the Batallón Atlacatl near Masacre de Tenango y Guadalupe .
