Cesare Segre

Cesare Segre (born April 4, 1928 in Verzuolo ; † March 16, 2014 in Milan ) was an Italian Romanist , Medievalist and semioticist .

life and work

Segre studied in Turin with his uncle Santorre Debenedetti , with Benvenuto Terracini and with Gianfranco Contini . He taught in Trieste from 1954 to 1956 and at the University of Pavia from 1956 until his retirement . There he founded and directed the Centro di Ricerca dei Testi e Tradizioni testuali . He was a member of the Accademia della Crusca (1974/1988) and the Accademia dei Lincei (1993), as well as honorary doctorates from the Universities of Geneva , Chicago , Barcelona (2004) and Santiago de Compostela (2010). He was the second president of the International Association for Semiotic Studies , founded in 1969 , and honorary president of the Société Rencesvals from 1985 to 1988 , and was one of the editors of the journals Strumenti critici and Medioevo romanzo . In 1992 he received the Antonio Feltrinelli Prize . He was married to the romanist Maria Luisa Meneghetti (* 1950).
