Historical meaning

With the sixth legislative period of the South Tyrolean state parliament, the maximum length of the legislative period was increased from the previous four years to five years. This innovation was introduced during the current term of office of the state parliament after the Second Statute of Autonomy for South Tyrol had been passed in the Italian parliament in 1971 , which in the following years resulted in an increase in the legislative powers of the state parliament and an associated increase in its importance.
