Historical meaning

The 2003 state election was the first since the Italian constitutional reform passed in 2001. A legal change came into effect for South Tyrol: up until now, the regional council had always been formally elected even after the Second Statute of Autonomy , from which the South Tyrolean and Trentino state parliaments emerged. Now the electoral mode has been adapted to the actual importance of the people's representatives: In 2003, the South Tyrolean and Trentino state parliaments were elected for the first time, from which the regional council was then composed.
