Historical meaning

In the run-up to the election, the number of seats in the state parliament was increased from originally 20 seats in 1948 to 22 seats. Compared to the first state election, there were only minor shifts in mandates: The two additional mandates went to the South Tyrolean People's Party (SVP); the Italian Christian Democrats ( Democrazia Cristiana ) increased their mandate strength from two to three mandates at the expense of the outgoing list Unione Indipendenti . All other parties were able to keep their mandate from 1948.
