Historical meaning

The state election in 1973 was the first in the period of validity of the Second Statute of Autonomy for South Tyrol, which resulted in a considerable increase in legislative powers of the state parliament and an associated increase in importance at the expense of the Regional Council Trentino-South Tyrol . In the course of this constitutional reorganization of South Tyrol's autonomy, the number of mandates of the state parliament was increased from 25 seats in 1968 to 34 seats.

From a political point of view, the election was marked by a clear shift to the left, which coincides with the Western European trend of the years. The Italian communists and socialists ( PCI and PSI ) each won a second mandate. For the first time, a total of three mandates went to regional social democratic parties ( SFP and SPS ) that had previously split off from the South Tyrolean People's Party (SVP). Accordingly, it lost votes for the first time in its history and was only able to win four of the nine additional mandates. The Italian Christian Democrats ( DC ) increased from four to five mandates, which enabled them to compensate for the departure of the Italian Liberals ( PLI ) for the Italian language group . The neo-fascists of the MSI were able to keep their mandate despite losing votes.
