Historical meaning

With the election to the regional council for Trentino-Alto Adige in November 1948, those legislative organs were constituted for the first time, for which the legal framework conditions had been created with the adoption of the Italian constitution in the first statute of autonomy for the region of Trentino-Alto Adige . The South Tyrolean People's Party (SVP) was able to achieve a clear majority of seats in this election in the South Tyrolean state parliament and was the only party of German and Ladin-speaking South Tyroleans to enforce the self-imposed “sole right of representation” against the Social Democratic Party of South Tyrol (SDPS) ; until 1964, the SVP was to remain the only regional party in the South Tyrolean state parliament in this regard. The six national parties, which were largely based on the Italian-speaking population of South Tyrol, were able to win seven mandates, which were spread across the political center ( Democrazia Cristiana ) and the left and right ideological spectrum.
