Cesare in Farmacusa (German: Caesar in Pharmacusa ) is a heroic-comic opera (Italian "Dramma eroicomico") in two acts by Antonio Salieri with a text by Carlo Prospero Defranceschi based on Plutarch . The first performance took place on June 2, 1800 in Vienna's Kärntnerthortheater .
According to contemporary reports, the opera was a great success, and even the critical Allgemeine Musical Zeitung praised the piece several times. Individual numbers - such as the finale of the first act - were even integrated into concert programs. As an overture, Salieri has taken over the prelude to his opera seria L'Europa riconosciuta, composed in 1778 for the opening of La Scala in Milan, with a few changes. The overture inspired Beethoven when composing the storm in the 4th movement of the 6th symphony (Pastorale).
The libretto was set to music by Stefano Pavesi after an arrangement by an unknown hand in 1817 and performed under the title La gioventù di Cesare at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan .
