Chairs Missing is the second studio album by the British rock band Wire . It was released in August 1978 on the Harvest Records label.

background

Chairs Missing was released in August 1978, just eight months after the debut album Pink Flag . The recordings took place again in the Advision Studios in London . Chairs Missing marked the departure from the minimalism of the debut, instead the songs became more complex and the synthesizer played by producer Thorne played a key role. Wire's stated goal was to be "progressive". The experiments with electronic sounds and the influences of ambient caused the trade press to compare the album with the music of Brian Eno . Chairs missing is considered an early example of post-punk . Wire continued the approach to electronic music on later albums.

Like its predecessor Pink Flag , the album Chairs Missing was received very positively by the trade press. Above all, the band's further development and innovative energy were praised.

The New Musical Express voted the album at number 394 of the 500 best albums of all time. In the list of 100 best albums of 1970 by Pitchfork Media has Chairs Missing Place 33rd

"A euphemism for insanity, Chairs Missing is an apt summation of Wire's disturbing music. A product of London's punk scene, the quartet nonetheless owed a debt to the art-school experimentation of the mid-60s, a contrast that gave their craft originality. "

- Colin Larkin

“On Chairs Missing , the music fits the cerebral to closed content. No longer the quick punk of Pink Flag , but rather Pink Floyd . The crazy, early Pink Floyd, not the smug stadium rock dinosaurs. This is mainly due to the fact that Wire dared to try an instrument that was an absolute no-go for punks because of its prog past in 1977: the synthesizer. Crazy - which in turn fits the album title, a slang expression for someone who no longer has all the cups in their closet. What's missing now is a hit. Appearance: Outdoor Miner . "

- Daniel Gehret
