Chamarajanagar (also: Chamarajanagara, Chamrajnagar ; Kannada : ಚಾಮರಾಜನಗರ Cāmarājanagara [ ˈtʃɑːmʌrɑːdʒʌnʌɡʌrʌ ]) is a city in the southern Indian state of Karnataka with around 70,000 inhabitants (2011 census).
Chamarajanagar is located in the south of Karnataka not far from the border with the neighboring state of Tamil Nadu at an altitude of 662 meters. The next largest city is Mysore 61 kilometers north, Bangalore , the capital of Karnataka, is around 185 kilometers northeast. Chamarajanagar is the administrative center of the district of the same name .
Chamarajanagar was originally known as Arakottara . The city got its current name after the former Raja of Mysore Chamaraja IX. Wodeyar , who was born here in 1774. Chamanaraja's son and successor Krishnaraja Wodeyar initiated the renaming of the city in 1818 and had the large Chamarajeshwara temple built, which today is the main attraction of Chamarajanagar.
According to the 2011 census, Chamarajanagar has 69,875 inhabitants. 76 percent of the population are Hindus , 22 percent are Muslims and 1 percent are Christians . The main language is Kannada , which according to the 2001 census is spoken by 73 percent of the population as their mother tongue. Urdu (18 percent) is common among Muslims . Smaller minorities speak Telugu (4 percent), Tamil and Hindi (2 percent each).
