Chang Cheh ( Chinese  張徹  /  张彻 , Pinyin Zhāng Chè , Jyutping Zoeng 1 Cit 3 ; born February 10, 1923 in Shanghai , China , † June 22, 2002 in Hong Kong ) was a film director and screenwriter from Hong Kong. Chang was one of the most influential, high-profile, and hard-working directors in martial arts cinema from the 1960s to 1980s.

Life

Chang graduated from National Central University in Chongqing with a degree in Politics and became a film critic in Hong Kong. First scripts followed; The first was filmed in 1947. In 1949 he made his (unlisted) debut as a director; A second film followed in 1957. He has directed permanently since 1965. His big breakthrough came in 1967 with the film The one-armed swordsman , which was the most successful Hong Kong film of all time to date.

Numerous action films, influenced as much by the style of Japanese samurai films as by spaghetti westerns , followed. He employed several teams of martial artists / actors to use in his films: David Chiang and Ti Lung made one, Chi Kuan Chung and Fu Sheng another. The third, called "The (Five) Venoms", consisted of Sun Chien, Kuo Chui, Lu Feng, Lo Meng and Chiang Sheng. After all, Tung Chi Wah, Tu Yu Ming, Hsu Shao Jien and Chow Lung were "The Baby Venoms". Almost 100 films were made under Chang Cheh's direction.

In the German-speaking world, most of his films were only shown mutilated and in many different versions.

Many filmmakers, particularly John Woo (who also worked as an assistant on several of Chang's films) and Ringo Lam , cite Chang's way of working as one of their greatest influences. He earned the designation as "The Godfather of Martial Arts Films".
