Chiang Dai Wei ( Chinese  姜 大衛  /  姜 大卫 , Pinyin Jiāng Dàwèi , Jyutping Goeng 1 Daai 6 wai 6 , born as Chiang Wei-Nian 姜偉 年  /  姜伟 年 , Jiāng Wěinián ; born June 29, 1947 in Suzhou , Jiangsu ), known as David Chiang or . John Chiang , is a Chinese actor . He is one of the best known actors in martial arts films by the Hong Kong- based film studio Shaw Brothers , in which he was often used alongside the equally well-known Ti Lung . To this day he is active as an actor, director and screenwriter.

Life

Chiang's parents were well-known actors in Shanghai before moving to Hong Kong. David Chiang was in front of the camera as a child, as were his two brothers Paul Chun and Derek Yee . He began his career with the Shaw Brothers as a stuntman before being discovered as an actor and martial artist by director Chang Cheh , whose favorite protégé he soon became. At the end of the 60s / beginning of the 70s he became an idol all over Asia, mostly in the role of the charming, martial arts hero. He has been nominated several times for the Best Actor Award at the Asian Film Festival, which he won in 1972 for Kuan - The Relentless Avenger ( Vengeance! ). Many of the films now have an important status in the development of martial arts cinema. To date he has appeared in over 120 films.

Chiang lives in Canada with his wife and children. It is dubbed in German by Bernd Schramm , Elmar Wepper and Dennis Schmidt-Foss , among others .

Others

  • David Chiang was shorter than other actors in Hong Kong cinema and nowhere near as muscular. Director Chang Cheh gave him the name "David".
  • At about the same time, Chang Cheh also discovered another young stuntman, Ti Lung , as an actor, who quickly became famous as Chang's permanent acting partner. Both stood together in front of the camera in numerous films by their mentor and became one of the most famous duos of the era for which Chang Cheh was known. The separation of the two in the late 1970s caused great disappointment among fans.
  • The Sword of the Yellow Tiger (The New One Armed Swordsman) from 1970, in which David Chiang played the leading role, was the first martial arts film to be shown successfully in German cinemas. This film was a remake of a film in which superstar Jimmy Wang Yu had already portrayed a one-armed swordsman. After Wang left the Shaw Brothers Studios a short time later, David Chiang took its place as the face of the studio.
  • In 2004, Chiang received a star on the Avenue of Stars (Hong Kong) , a street modeled on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles.
